Ep 65: Redefining What Success Means To You
What does success mean? How do you define success? Why do I fail? Am I a failure? Can I redefine success? What is the American Dream? How do I redefine what failure means? How do I redefine what success means? Can we create a new dream?
In this episode of Love Always, Self, Karista & Shyra discuss learning to redefine what success and failure mean to each of us. Growing up in the US taught that success means “living the American dream.” The old dream began to take flight after being coined in the 1930s and was associated with upward mobility and enough economic success to lead a comfortable life. To many, the route to success appeared to be a single narrow road, encompassing lower and higher education, obtaining degrees or licenses, gaining and holding one job and staying loyal to one company, building and growing a family, then you work tirelessly until retirement and pension kick in. Then, after years of climbing corporate ladders and focusing on company needs, you were finally given permission to do what pleases the heart, mind, and soul, if you are financially able.
This old dream is just that, old…and limited. It worked well for many decades as a driver in the country’s economic growth. However, this old, materialistic, consumer-based dream is outdated and is no longer a motivator for many. If the American Dream still drives you, we are not here to state that this is wrong. And if the old American Dream doesn’t excite you, you’re not wrong either. We’re in fact stating that there are multiple paths to experiencing your own definitions of success.
Today’s discussion highlights our opportunity to now redefine what failures and success mean to you. Rather than quantifying this with material goods and cash flow, it is now about qualifying your success with how you feel. So, how do we redefine what success and failures mean to each of us?
First, let’s recognize that failures are a tool or a stepping stone to assist us in our success. Failure is not the antithesis of success, but rather an important part of experiencing success. Failing at something can feel terrible and it’s ok to give yourself space to grieve the loss of reaching immediate success. However, the usefulness of failing extends to creating opportunities for greater insight, shifting perspectives, learning about Self and the world, and making changes to elevate your physical experience.
Some things to consider when redefining what success and failure mean to you:
- Start with where you’re at. How do you currently define success?
- When you imagine reaching the pinnacle of your current definition of success, what does that feel like?
- Joyful, accomplished, impressed?
- Unsatisfied, pressured to carry on?
- What feelings generally add to the feeling of success?
- Many will express, “I will be happy when…” Do you want to feel this more regularly? Can you give yourself permission to experience happiness before you reach the end goal?
- What does failing feel like to you? Are the feelings extreme?
- Does failure completely derail you? Or are you able to zoom out and see the opportunity to learn, grow, or even change course?
- Do you compare where you’re at to where other people are? Is this fair to you? Are you even able to see behind the scenes into the world of struggles that are hidden from the public eye?
So how will you choose to redefine what failure and success mean to you?
